The Westfield Centre forms part of a massive £1.6bn regeneration project in West London. The mall houses an atrium for live events, 15 restaurants, 265 shops, 4500 parking spaces, a cinema and other leisure facilities and the two-year project was completed in October 2008.

ProTile’s contract involved tiling in toilet blocks and baby-changing facilities as well as the multiple departure lounges at tube and rail stations, and the two bus terminals that serve the site. The transport infrastructure upgrade is at the heart of the project at an estimated £170m and developers early estimates identify that 60% of visitors to the new shopping centre will come by public transport.

In the departure terminals there are substantial family areas and eating opportunities, all of which have extensive wall tiling.   High profile Italian Bisazza mosaic tiles, the industry’s leader in the production of glass mosaic for floors and walls, were supplied by Domus, the main supplier of tile products for the architectural specification markets.

These were applied by ProTile in the glamorous baby-changing rooms at the Westfield Centre.  Specified by The Buchan Group, a picture-perfect four-piece Bisazza pattern set is carefully applied following a test template.  This template, once signed off by client and architect, acts as an application benchmark for all operatives to follow precisely.

ProTile have used weber.set rapid SPF, a flexible rapid-setting, cement-based wall and floor tile adhesive which is available in light grey and white, ideal for easy bedding of larger tiles and ready for light foot traffic and grouting after two hours. In areas where there is expected intermittent moisture, weber.joint colour grout has been used.  It is suitable for joint widths of up to 15mm, has a very fine texture, and is available in 25 colours.

A specific requirement in this project was the need to achieve a perfect colour-matched grout for the Domus-supplied tiles for which Weber has the technology and capacity. “Weber was asked to look at this non-standard colour and happily for us, our samples were the perfect match,” states Adam Dudley, Contract Sales Manager, Weber.   Porcelain tiles also applied by ProTile using Weber products have been applied in a variety of areas including food preparation, visitor walkways and leisure areas as well as the magnificent Bridle Suite.
