weber maxit alpha, a hemi-hydrate screed, was preferred by main contractor Works Ltd, of Pall Mall, London, because of its ability to meet a number of criteria for the project.

Primarily, weber maxit alpha was specified for its ability to complement the underfloor heating installed in the exclusive 11,000 sq ft property, which stands in an Edwardian square and incorporates substantial living accommodation, six en-suite bedrooms, a cinema, gymnasium and swimming pool.

By using the high performance pumped screed, Works Ltd were able to control the thickness of the floor to provide optimum thermal performance, whilst providing a smooth finish for the application of a variety of floor coverings and finishes which followed.

weber maxit alpha was applied on two basement levels and a section of the first floor in a thickness of up to 45 mm, providing 25mm cover for the heating pipes.

The minimal shrinkage weber maxit alpha ensured a finished screed ideal for use in contact with the underfloor heating installation, avoiding the drawbacks of movement or cracking often associated traditional cementitious screeds.

weber maxit alpha’s rapid curing, allowing early trafficking, also helped to keep work on track, with follow-on trades able to resume work within 24 hours.

In all, more than 50 tonnes of weber maxit alpha were used during the course of the project, with the application of 26 tonnes on the first floor completed in just three hours.

Dara Khera, Managing Director of Works Ltd, commented: “weber maxit alpha provided the durability we needed to ensure that it could be trafficked hours after installation.

“It is fast, accurate, simple to use and doesn’t shrink, with the added bonus that it can be used as a durable work surface. These factors all add up to making it the most cost-effective screeding system we have ever used.”
