The apartments, ranging in size from one to four bedrooms, have been planned into a series of varying height blocks with a single fourteen storey tower block overlooking the Blackwall Basin and the lower blocks extending round into the Poplar Marina.
The external facades have been constructed using both decorative brickwork and extensive areas of textured and coloured render.
The tower block, designed with a strong vertical emphasis, is clad with metal panels, curtain walling, decorative brick and rendered feature walls.
The textured and coloured rendered surfaces have been created using weber.therm XM External wall insulation. This solution was selected by the Architects as being both fast track and cost effective, providing high levels of thermal insulation with the desired strong coloured finishes and textures.
The installation involved mechanically fixing and bonding 70 mm thick expanded polystyrene to the concrete structure using Weber lightweight adhesive, reinforcing the surface with mesh bedded in further coats of the adhesive and finally finishing with a 1.5 mm thick weber.plast TF acrylic coating in various colours.
The colours, mauve and white for the tower block and white for the lower buildings with recessed areas finished in yellow, were specially selected to contrast with other wall materials being used and support the strong patterned and sculptured facade of the final design.
