Structures such as those designed for the University of East London's Design and Engineering Campus combine fast track building with exciting architectural dynamics. This type of modern specification, with eye catching lines, demands high quality and versatile products to fulfil the architect's dreams. The façade finishes used on both the academic and residential buildings comprise developments from Weber extensive external insulation selection.
A flexible polystyrene slab was developed for areas of the academic buildings where the façade is circular. The 180mm thick Expomesh EWI insulation slab was fixed using various combinations of adhesive and mechanical fixing dependant on the type of substrate which, in this case, included both solid blockwork and steel frame. A hand finished, protective, cementitious polymer blend render was applied incorporating a Meshcloth and finished using Weber coatings in a range of striking colours.
A similar weber.therm XM System was introduced on the walls of the residential buildings, being constructed of solid, curved, load bearing blockwork. Fire resisting properties of the cladding were a major consideration therefore a Mineral Fibre system was adopted and finished in an identical way to that used on the academic buildings.
The Weber systems were chosen for this special project for a variety of reasons. Speed of application was critical as the entire project was subject to a very precise completion programme. On the academic buildings insulation performance requirements were very demanding (0.2W/m2C) and were obtained using weber.therm XM External Wall Insulation system. Another major contributory factor in the decision process was the ability of the system to provide a high class finish for all facades.
