The cladding system was required firstly to insulate the concrete structure; secondly, it had to make a considerable contribution to the acoustic performance of the wall construction. New windows would be installed into re-formed openings between apparently exposed edge beams. A number of areas were required to be finished in bright bold colours. The rest of the building would be white and was required to stay clean with as little maintenance as possible.

Working closely with the designers, Weber suggested weber.therm XM External Wall Insulation System with 70mm Mineral Fibre insulant. Approved Applicators Harrison Render Systems mechanically fixed the insulation to both the existing substrates as well as the newly constructed wall areas. The existing windows were removed and the openings covered by constructing a new wall using lightweight steel framing with ply sheathing. The voids in this structure were filled with dense insulation in addition to the fibreslab being applied to the outside. This was required to provide as much mass as possible in order to reduce noise ingress. Clearly, the mineral fibre insulation would also provide a reassuring barrier in the case of a fire in the hotel.

A high water shedding silicone enhanced acrylic finish was used to ensure good performance in relation to weathering.

The results of a close working association between Keith Horn Architects, Applicators Harrison Render Systems and system designers / supplier Weber are clear to see in the striking façade that has given a complete new life, radical new appearance and reliable protection to a tired and redundant city centre building.
