Technical data
Preparation
No mortar will develop full bond adhesion strength without the surface of the substrate being carefully prepared to give a mechanically sound and clean surface.
Concrete and brickwork
The surface must be prepared by suitable means to remove all traces of laitance, oil and grease. Care must be taken to ensure the oil and grease is removed and not simply spread over a larger area.
New concrete must be cured for at least three days, except when using weber.cem pyracrete to build up the chamber tops when it can be applied just after the concrete has set.
The surface must be dampened then wiped free of surface water.
Iron and steel
Metal surfaces should be clean and free of rust. Frames contaminated with oil or grease must be cleaned with a suitable solvent before application. The underside of frames must be wire brush to provide a good key.
Mixing
The recommended mixer is a twin-bladed, double-handed electrically driven paddle mixer. The contra-rotating paddles do not create a torque that is difficult to control and mixing is quick and easy even with this type of firm mortar. Mixing time is about 2 minutes. Alternatively it is possible to produce a consistent mortar with a forced action mixer (A) or a MR4 type of blade fitted to a powerful drill (B). Mixing time is about 4 min.
We do not recommend hand mixing or mixing with a shovel on a board.
Shake the can of latex then pour it into a clean pail.
When using the recommended double headed mixer, in cold weather, leave around 100 ml of latex out (about a 2 cm depth in the bottom of the can) and then mix fully.
If using the single headed MR4 type of mixing blade, or in warm conditions, add all the latex to the pail.
Add the powder slowly while mixing all the time. After about half the powder is added, stir around the rim and into the bottom of the pail to ensure thorough mixing of all the powder, eliminating any undispersed powder that may have accumulated in the bottom.
The mix will appear runny, like a grout at this stage. Continue to add powder, mixing all the while until all the powder has been added. Continue to mix until the mortar appears to be uniform in appearance and dough-like in consistency. This produces a thixotropic mortar mix that is very easy to place and will allow the manhole frame to be aligned before it sets.
Allow maximum 10 minutes for the installation of the mortar and the frame.
Application
Work quickly, as this mortar is rapid setting
Apply the mixed mortar onto the prepared damp concrete base in a pyramidical section ensuring that sufficient material is present to provide complete contact and the required thickness over the whole area. Lower the frame and press firmly into position using steel or timber guides to provide correct levels and alignment. More mortar can be mixed and used around and on top of the flanges of the frame to provide lateral restraint.
